How it works

This tool multiplies each subscription's monthly cost by the number of subscriptions, then extends that to a monthly, annual and long-term total. The counterfactual section shows what a modest hypothetical 5% annual growth could do with the same money — clearly labeled as an illustration, not a projection.

The formula

monthly cost = cost per subscription × number of subscriptions

A concrete example

Four subscriptions at $12, $15, $10 and $8 add up to $45 a month — $540 a year. Over 10 years that's $5,400; with a hypothetical 5% annual return on the same deposits it could be around $6,900.

What this calculator does not tell you

  • Costs can rise over time; the tool holds the price constant.
  • The growth comparison is a transparent illustration using a fixed hypothetical 5% rate — it is not a prediction and investing involves risk.
  • Some subscriptions genuinely save or earn you money (a gym you use, a software package for work). Value is part of the equation.

Frequently asked questions

Small recurring charges are easy to overlook because they don't appear as large one-time purchases. Individually tiny, together they often become a meaningful monthly line item — that's what makes the total feel surprising.
